Another Home Tournament!

Our past home tournament went great! We went 4-0 for the weekend! After traveling to Texas the previous weekend, it was nice to be home again. It was a good weekend for us to prepare for our upcoming confrence tournaments, one of which will be home again! This past weekend was also Parent weekend and senior night. After the tournament ended on Saturday, all the parents and players gathered in the hall of fame room for a family BBQ dinner and ice cream cake for dessert. It was great for everyone to catch up with their family members and enjoy the evening together. Congrats to our seniors, Christine and Jennifer, on all their accomplishments!!! We love you!

McKannan breaks career dig record!!

In Birmingham-Southern’s match against No. 17 Southwestern University this past Friday in Georgetown, Texas, senior libero Jennifer McKannan became BSC’s all-time digs leader, breaking the previous record held by Sarah Harris.

McKannan broke the record with her fifth dig against Southwestern. Harris, who graduated last year, tallied 1,484 career digs; McKannan now owns 1,596 career digs in the young 2010 season. She is also second on the career list for digs per set with 4.31.

GREAT WORK JENNIFER!!

Southwestern

This was a long weekend! All four of our matches went to five set. The first day didn't really go as planned. We dropped our first two matches of the season to Southwestern and Austion College. We bounced back the second day beating Trinity and Rhodes! Beating Trinity was a really exciting experience for the team because it is the school Coach Fricke coached at before coming here. We now know how important energy is for us, and we plan to work on that as well as improve on other aspects throughout the season. While the trip to Texas was fun as well as experiencing true mexican food at Mamacita's, we are really excited to be back at home this weekend for our next tournament!

Rhodes

BSC volleyball has opened up its road schedule in a dominating fashion, plowing through the Rhodes Tournament, finishing the weekend with a perfect record!

First up for the Panthers was Franklin & Marshall College, all the way from Pennsylvania. We took the match in 3 sets, setting the tone for the rest of the tournament. We ended the night with a tough 3-1 victory over conference foe, Milsaps College. The next day got off to a great start with a comfortable 3-0 win over Central Baptist College, and ended up with a little tighter 3-1 win over Webster College. It was certainly a very successful weekend for the team, with every player contributing to each win. We are very excited about our 8-0 start, and we are really looking forward to the rest of the season!

Feelings Coming into the Season

Coming into the season we were extremely nervous yet eager to start practices. Neither of us knew exactly what to expect and we weren’t totally sure whether practices would be like high school or not.  Our first week of practices were very nerve racking, as we were doing our best to prove ourselves to the other girls and the coaches. Practices are more difficult, but they are definately preparing us for every game we play. All of the girls welcomed us and calmed our nerves greatly! They definitely were a great help the first few days. Despite the nerves, we made it through the first few weeks with help from the whole team! We both love Coach April, Coach Kyndall, and all of the girls! They took us in just like a part of the family and we are so glad we get to be a part of this team.

BSC Hilltop Classic (aka McK Attack Classic)

This past weekend was a great start to the season for the BSC volleyball team! We came out from the weekend 4-0 and as tournament champions!  We started off on Saturday by defeating Mississippi College and Berry College, and continued the winning streak on Sunday by beating Piedmont and Huntington.  We used this successful weekend to bring awareness to an issue that personally affects members of our team, ALS.  Our team played and won in honor of those suffering from ALS. We also wanted to say thank you to our awesome fans who supported us the entire weekend! We reallly appreciate everyone coming out to watch!

Montevallo Scrimmage

Hey Everyone!

I know this post is a little late considering we have already completed our first tournament weekend with 4 wins and no losses!! WOOHOO! :) However, I think talking about our preseason scrimmage against Montevallo is still very important!

Getting the opportunity to play against another school so early into our season with very few practices under our belts proved very beneficial for our team. I think we not only learned alot about what we needed to focus and work on skill-wise, but we also got a jump start on our team chemistry and learning how to work together as one unit. This scrimmage gave us a chance to fully experience what we needed to improve on before our first tournament and obviously it definitely helped us out in the Hilltop Classic!

Not only was the scrimmage a great learning experience, but we also got to meet and get to know another team. The girls from Montevallo were all really nice and we ended the scrimmage with a pizza party! Volleyball and pizza...is there a better combination?

ALS Walk

Saturday, August 28th, the upperclassman went to Huntsville to participate in a fundraiser walk for ALS.  ALS is a disease that has affected my family and raising awareness has become a cause that is very dear to my heart.  My Dad was diagnosed in September 2008 and has been very involved with raising awareness ever since.  It meant to much to him, my family, and me that my team went to go walk in support of him and the cause.  The team had a great time and I was so grateful that we could be a part of the occasion.

Expectations for this season

I have a few expectations for this season.  Quantitative goals are to finish above .500 and to be in the top half of our conference.  Another goal I have for our team this season is to immediately identify problems we are having  and take action to fix them in a timely manner.  Finally, I want us to play together as a team and have the trust that we put in each other show through in the court.

Hilltop Classic now known as the "McK Attack Classic"

The Birmingham Southern volleyball team picked up two more wins today to win the 2010 Hilltop Classic and open the season with a record of 4-0.  The Panthers defeated Piedmont College, 3-1, and Huntingdon College, 3-0, in Bill Battle Coliseum.

Against Piedmont, senior Christine Denning and Junior Hope Harris both posted double-doubles, as Denning recorded 44 assists and 17 digs, and Harris had 14 kills and 11 digs.  Sophomore Shelby Moore led BSC with 16 kills and a .414 attack percentage, as well as five blocks, and senior Jennifer McKannan led with 19 digs.

Both Shelby Moore and Christine Denning were named to the All Tournament team.

Against Huntingdon, Moore led again with 10 kills, sophomore Lauren Reibe led with 22 assists, and Harris led with 13 digs.  Moore was also impressive with four blocks.

Prior to BSC's match against Huntingdon, McKannan's father, David, who was diagnosed with ALS three years ago, was honored for his contributions over the last four years to the Panther volleyball program.  The team took donations for the ALS Foundation of Alabama, totaling $207, and announced that they would rename the Hilltop Classic to the "McK Attack Classic" in his honor in years to come.

GAME TIME!!

Just got back from our pep rally at BSC and I konw it's late but wanted to blog before our tournament tomorrow.  Oh yea... we are hosting the 2010 Hilltop Classic this weekend... Anyway... our players have been working hard during preseason and are exctied to finally get out on the court to compete against another team instead of their own teammates.

This weekend is not only a big weekend for us because we are playing but because we are raising money for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease."  ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body.

If you can't get out and support us this weekend please support your local ALS Association.  Check out their website at http://www.alsa.org/.

Have a great weekend everyone.... GO PANTHERS!!

YMCA 2010

On Tuesday the 24th we took a trip to one of the local YMCAs to hold a coach's clinic and teach their volleyball players some of the basics of the game!  We started off by showing the girls how to properly warm up and stretch and quickly moved into the basics of passing, serving, hitting, and communication.  The young girls were excited to learn and eager to play more.  As we taught each of the girls the specific skills, Coach April was explaining the drills and important factors to the coaches.

We returned the following Tuesday, the 31st for round two with the girls and their families, but this time, we were the premier players of the night. The BSC volleyball team played and intersquad scrimmage, with Coach Kyndall Waters joining in the fun as well. We first demonstrated some of our own pre-practice warmups for the girls, then played and intense game to 25, where the winning teams margin of victory was only 3 points! It was a very fun and exciting night for both the BSC volleyball players and coaches, as well as all of the spectators involved.

Testing and Preseason!

For testing before preseason practices started this year we changed it up a bit. We started with broad jumps and moved on to push-ups and finally got to the shuttle sprints, which we were most nervous about. The broad jumping wasn't too bad at all, it was the push-ups and sprints that made us sore. We had to do as many push-ups in one minute as possible, and for one to be counted we had to touch our chests to a partner's fist. Jennifer outdid everyone with an insane 39 push-ups! Once the sprints were over we were all glad to finally get to practice.
We started our two-a-days after testing so we could get ready for our scrimmage against Montevallo and prepare for our first matches in the BSC Hilltop Classic this weekend! I feel like our preseason this year was way more fun than last year's-maybe because I knew what to expect, or maybe because our team is so incredibly awesome! We also got to work some clinics at Birmingham area YMCA's and worked on a Habitat for Humanity house, as well as supporting awareness for the ALS Walk in Huntsville. I am really happy with what we've done so far and can't wait to get back to playing again!

Movie Night!

There's nothing better after a long day of practice than relaxing with your teammates for a movie night!
All of us cuddled up in blankets and munched on popcorn, chips, and queso while we enjoyed a great movie. This was such a great way to hang out with everyone outside the volleyball gym, and really gave everyone a chance to get to know eachother and talk about the fun things we did over the summer. As much as we all enjoy movies, I'm sure the team movie nights will continue for many more pre-seasons...and during the school year. We all need a good break during the week!
